RtI is a three-tiered approach to the early identification and support of students with behavior or learning needs.
The process begins with a high-quality instruction and a universal screener that is administered to all children three times a year to help identify children who may be struggling.
Struggling learners are provided with research-based interventions that increase in time and intensity in order to accelerate their learning.
Progress is monitored to see how the student is responding to intervention, and the interventions are changed as necessary.
Data collected from this process is used to help determine special education eligibility.
In order for RtI to work and improve student learning, the following pieces must be in place:
1) High quality, scientifically-based classroom instruction - teachers must be using the very best methods to teach all students
2) On-going student assessment - teachers must be able to know what their students know and what they need to learn
3) Tiered instruction - this refers to the intensity of instruction and interventions
4) Parental Involvement - this means you!!! You are an integral piece in helping your child meet his or her academic and behavior goals!
