Fourth Grade
Your child is in fourth grade, and you're wondering what you can do to help him or her be more successful in school! Here are a few videos with activities that you can do with your child at home.

Asking and Answering Questions about Stories






Have your child choose twobooks at his or her reading level!Then, for each book, have your child complete one of the following activities. Children who complete two activities over the summer and bring them to school in the fall will get to participate in a celebration event!


  • Talk about books with your child. Ask questions such as Who is in the story, What is happening or What is the problem (solution), When is the story taking place, Where is the story taking place, Why are the characters acting this way? Why did they …? , and sometimes How is this happening? How are the characters going to solve this problem?

  • Fractions: Practice using and talking about “benchmark fractions” such as 1/3, ¼, ½, ¾ and a whole by baking together and have your child do the measuring

  • Elapsed Time: talk with your child about how long it takes to do something from start to finish for example: time it takes from home to Grandma’s.

  • Multiplication: Practice skip counting all the facts in the car or a memory game with the answers on one half and the math problem on the other.

  • Estimating: Have your child estimate the cost of one or two items at the store to see if there is enough money.
