Fourth Grade Your child is in fourth grade, and you're wondering what you can do to help him or her be more successful in school! Asking and Answering Questions about Stories
Have your child choose twobooks at his or her reading level!Then, for each book, have your child complete one of the following activities. Children who complete two activities over the summer and bring them to school in the fall will get to participate in a celebration event!
Talk about books with your child. Ask questions such as Who is in the story, What is happening or What is the problem (solution), When is the story taking place, Where is the story taking place, Why are the characters acting this way? Why did they …? , and sometimes How is this happening? How are the characters going to solve this problem?
Plan and Write a story about a vacation you went on and twist it by adding a “What if…” to your story.
Have a sibling or parent partner write a fun story with you. You write a line your family member writes a line and put it all together to laugh at your crazy summer story.
Lay on the ground look up at the clouds and create a story about the shapes and write it later.
Prompt: “I walked into the gym for lunch and found my classmates floating and there was a big red button on the other side of the room…”
Prompt: “The ant on my corner…”
Prompt: “YIKES! I looked up in the sky and saw falling.”
Fractions:Practice using and talking about “benchmark fractions” such as 1/3, ¼, ½, ¾ and a whole by baking together and have your child do the measuring
Dividing:practice diving up a pizza and have your child tell you the fractional amount that is left over or the fractional amount they are going to eatJ
